Perth & Kinross Council’s Employment Support Team has a strong working relationship with Sainsbury’s Superstore in Kinross. The manager Michael Bryant along with supervisors and frontline staff are committed to ensuring positive action in the recruitment and employment of people with disabilities.

Michael explains “We want to be the most inclusive retailer where everyone can fulfil their potential.”

Karen Brown is an employment support worker with the team and currently supports three members of staff within the store. “Michael is very approachable and is always willing to develop his staff and maximise their working experience whilst importantly ensuring that the customer continues to receive a first class service.” Michael and his team have put in reasonable adjustments including giving staff extra time and training to learn different aspects of working in the store. This allows colleagues facing additional challenges to work to gain confidence and the opportunity to grow within their working environment.

Michael added “We aspire to take a leadership approach to disability for our colleagues and we want to make sure our disabled and older customers love shopping with us too.”

One staff member that Karen has supported to maintain his employment is Michael Giles who said “I have been working in Sainsbury’s for several years now. When I first started it was a challenge to me which I embraced with good support from Sainsbury’s and more recently the Employment Support Team.”

“Work to me is highly satisfying and forms a large part of my social life along with improving my overall wellbeing.”

“I also continually update my training and through work have acquired a lot of new skills.”

Job retention is a crucial part of the supported employment model which The Employment Support Team are trained to deliver on following the national 5 stage employability pipeline. More details can be found on the Scottish Union of Supported Employment (SUSE) website
