Occupational Therapists in the Community Learning Disability Team support people with all types of learning disabilities to help them develop and continue with life skills, work and leisure activities as independently as possible. Occupational therapists provide practical support to empower people to facilitate recovery and overcome barriers preventing them from doing the things that matter to them.

Scotland’s learning disability strategy, The keys to life, seeks to improve the quality of life for people with learning disabilities so that they live longer healthier lives, participate fully in all aspects of society and prosper as individuals. Enabling people with learning disabilities to work is critical to achieving that vision.

Our Occupational Therapy service accepts referrals specifically for adults who have learning disabilities and complex needs which make it difficult for a person to find or be involved in vocational and work related activities. It is an individualised service that can provide assessment, identify areas of difficulty and support individuals to access other agencies. We use standardised assessments such as The Assessment of Work Performance and the Worker Role Interview based on the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) to identify vocational activities which are then appropriately graded and adapted to match the individual. Individuals are then supported in a variety of pre -vocational and employability skills, and where appropriate, individuals are also encouraged to link in with other members of the Employability Network for additional support with specific work related activity.
