Supporting working carers in Scotland

About Carer Positive

Carer Positive aims to encourage employers to create a supportive working environment for carers in the workplace.

Supporting carers to manage the sometimes difficult job of balancing work with caring responsibilities can deliver real benefits to employers as well as helping individuals and their families. Unfortunately many carers give up work because the job of juggling their work and caring responsibilities simply becomes too much.

The Carer Positive kitemark is awarded to employers in Scotland who have a working environment where carers are valued and supported. Carer Positive employers recognise the importance of retaining experienced members of staff, reducing absence, and cutting down on avoidable recruitment costs.

What‘s involved

The Carer Positive process is aimed to be clear and straightforward, based on a simple self-assessment process, with employers describing how they meet the criteria expected at each of 3 levels of the kitemark: engaged, established and exemplary.

Employers can progress from one stage to the next, building from an initial level of commitment to embedding a culture of support for carers within the organisation.

Gold Star Employer Awards Launch

Do you know a local forward-thinking firm who are going that extra mile to employ local people who face significant barriers to employment?

The Council has launched a new business awards scheme called the Perth and Kinross Gold Star Employer Awards and is seeking nominations for and from businesses which actively recruit young jobseekers, the long-term unemployed and those with varying disabilities where often reasonable adjustments may be required.

The Awards are being supported by Perth and Kinross Employment Connections, Perth and Kinross Employability Network, the Federation of Small Businesses and Perthshire Chamber of Commerce.

The scheme also benefits from the assistance of the Council's Employment Support Team. The Team is available to give advice and reassurance as well as practical in-work support to meet individual needs to companies looking to achieve Gold Star status. This could be by offering local people struggling to get a foot on the employment ladder with work experience or even a paid job.

Nominations are now open and a monthly winner will be selected by the judging panel which consists of representatives of the Federation of Small Businesses and Perthshire Chamber of Commerce.

Each monthly winner will receive a framed Gold Star certificate and have an article featuring their firm in the Perthshire Advertiser both in print and online.

An overall champion chosen from the monthly winners will be revealed at the end of the year.

If you:

  • are an employer who meets any of the criteria overleaf;
  • know an employer who meets any of the criteria;

please forward a nomination in no more than 250 words to us by email or calling the following number.
